Long Term Ecological Research: Theories, Technologies and their
Applications in Ecosystem Management
1. Conference Description
The challenges facing ecosystem managers and environmental policy makers include how to meet increased human needs for natural resources without degrading the goods and services provided by healthy ecological systems. State-of-the art approaches in ecological science requires international collaboration and joint research projects to broaden the scale at which research projects are conducted. This meeting will focus on bringing together the experience from participants in the ILTER network to share results and experience related to all aspects of long-term ecological research and monitoring, including the theories, methods and their applications in making sustainable ecosystems.
2. Conference topics which relevant to the theme will include (from the LTER core areas):
Theories and methods used in long-term ecological research and monitoring
Restoration of ecosystems
Ecosystem approach in ecosystem management
Cycling of water
Cycling of nutrients and organic matter
Patterns of primary production
Trophic structure
Organic matter accumulation and decomposition
Disturbances
3. Additional activities following the conference will include

5. Conference Language
The official language of the conference is English. All abstracts and presentations must be in English.
6. Participation
All those interested in participating in the conference are asked to return the Pre-Registration Form, no later than May 15, 2003.
7. Call for Papers
Contributed papers for oral presentation and/or posters on the topics listed above are welcome. Authors wishing to submit a paper should send an abstract to the Secretariat by May 15, 2003.
Abstracts should be sent as electronic files in MS-Word or Rich Text format by e-mail or on diskettes. An abstract should contain the title, names of authors, name and affiliation of contact person, text body, subject area according to the conference topics and suggested type of presentation (oral or poster). An abstract should not contain figures and tables and should not exceed 400 words.

2) Loess Plateau Trip (soil and water conservation and arid land management in Loess Plateau located in N. China)
Date: 5 days from September 8 to 12, 2003
Route: Beijing-Xian Yangling(Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, CAS) Ansai Research Station of Soil and Water Conservation, CAS -Yan an- Beijing.
Cost: Total US$ 772, including air tickets from Beijing to Xian (UD$ 126), Yenan to Beijing (US$ 146) and all meals, hotels, local transportation and other costs (US$ 500),
3) Qing-Zang ( Tibetan Plateau) Trip ( plateau landscape, conservation and ecosystem management):
Date: 8 days from September 8 to 15, 2003
Route: Xining (Institute of Plateau Biology, CAS)-Haibei Alpine Meadow Ecosystem Research Station-Xining-Lhasa (Tibetan Plateau Ecological Research Station, CAS).
Cost: Total US$ 1,270, including air tickets Beijing-Xining-Lasa (US$ 274), Meals,
hotels and local transportation (US$ 800) and (travel document fee, US$ 196).
4). Subtropical Evergreen Forest Trip ( Landscape and ecosystem management):
Date: 5 days, from Sept.8 ?C12, 2003.
Route: Beijing-Guangzhou-Heshan (Hilly Land Interdisciplinary Experimental Station, CAS)-Dinghushan (Forest Ecosystem Research Station, CAS)-other pla
Cost: UD$ 650, including air tickets from Beijing to Guangzhou(US$ 150), meals, hotels and local transportation (US$ 500) .

Registration before May 15, 2003: U.S.$ 200
Registration after May 15, 2003: U.S.$ 250
The registration fee US$ 200 includes refreshments during coffee breaks, lunches, a dinner and conference materials. Additional registration materials will be provided with the Second Announcement.
