合作内容: Artemisia species inhabit the harsh sandy deserts of Northwest China. How do their seeds germinate successfully where rainfall is rare and unpredictable and desiccation is extreme! We proposed that seed survival depends upon cellular repair occurring whenever enough water becomes available through high condensation of dew. Artemisia seeds are special in possessing thick polysaccharide coats that become mucilaginous when wetted, thereby prolonging the time seeds take to re-dry. We have just shown that dew alone can permit repair of DNA damage. We seek to investigate further how these desiccation-adapted seeds are able to maintain DNA repair at such low hydration. |
